김태동은 기본기가 탄탄한 사진가이다. 그는 멀리서지켜보거나 가까이 파고드는 방법을 알고 있으며, 도시를 관찰하거나 사람과 교감하는 방법도 알고 있다.그러한 능력은 그의 사진 속에서 낯선 곳을 익숙하게 보이도록 하거나 친근한 장면을 생소하게 보여주는 데에 기여하곤 한다.또한 그의 작품은 아무 것도 보이지 않는 어둠 속에 빛을 밝힐 줄 알고 먼 과거 속에 사라진 이야기를 끌어올리기도 한다.이러한 역량은 그가 2011년 이후 꾸준히 발표해온 다양한 연작들을 통해 찬찬히발현되며 축적되어 온 것이다.

김태동의 작업은 뚝심이 있다. 그는 현장을 두려워하지않는 작가이다. 도심의 후미진 새벽, 배회하는 거리의 사람들,DMZ의 잊혀진 전쟁, 별을 중심으로 회전하는 유적들에 맞서 한결 같이 긴장감을유지하는 힘이 그에겐 있다. 특히 근작인 <강선,2015- >과 < ΠΛΑΝΗΤΕΣ, PLANETES 2017- >은 대상에서 의미를 추출하는 관찰 조사 과정과 실험적인 표현 양식의 개발, 새로운 경험 요소를유도하는 시각화 방식에 있어서 차별적인 역량을 보여주었다.

아마도사진상 심사에 참여한 모든 심사위원들은 이번 기회에 김태동이 지닌 작가로서의 성장가능성에 대한 신뢰를 재확인할 수 있었다. 인물과 도시풍경, 조사와통찰, 정서와 해석, 실험과 실행을 넘나드는 그의 활동이 앞으로1년 간 진행될 멘토링을 겸한 수상 기념전의 준비과정을 통해서 더욱 풍성해지기를 기대한다.

Kim Taedong is a photographer with strong basic skills. Heknows how to watch from afar or dive closer to the city, and how to observe andinteract with people. Such abilities often contribute to making the unfamiliarplace look familiar or to show a familiar scene as unique in his pictures. Hiswork also sheds light in the dark of nothing and brings up stories that havedisappeared in the distant past. These skills have been accumulated throughvarious series that he has steadily announced since 2011.

Kim Taedong has great perseverance in his work. He is anartist who is not afraid of the field. He has the power to maintain aconsistent sense of security against the early morning corners of the city, thepeople on the streets, the forgotten war in the DMZ, and the star-rockingruins. In particular, the recent works <Rifling>(2015~) and<PLANETES>(2016~) have demonstrated differentiated capabilities in theobservational research process to extract meaning from a subject, thedevelopment of experimental expression forms, and visualization methods leadingto new experience elements.

All the judges who participated in the screening of AmadoPhotography Award were able to reaffirm their faith in Kim's potential to growup as an artist. We hope that his activities, ranging from people and urbanlandscapes to research and insight, emotion and interpretation, experiments andpractices, will be enriched by the process of preparing for the awardceremonial exhibition and the mentoring, which will take place over the nextyear.
