김태동은 사실을 기록하는 매체로서의 다큐멘터리 사진(DocumentaryPhotograph)과 정통사진(StraightPhotograph)에서 미학적 평가 기준이 되는 빛,조명, 시간, 프레임 등 사진만의 조형어법을 바탕으로 하면서도 장소 특정적 상황을 인위적으로 연출하여 사람과 공간의 의미를 드러내는 작업을 해오고 있다.

과거 전통사진이 카메라의 기술에 의존하여 대상을 포착하는데 그치는 반면 김태동의 사진은 작가의 예술적 의도를 담아내기 위하여 현실의 일부를 인위적으로 연출하는 반-구축적 태도(Semi-Constructive attitude)를 보여줌으로써 카메라와 사진만의 특징을 잘 보여주고 있다.

이번 전시에는 하나의 사진이 여러 선택의 과정을 통해 어떻게 새로운 사진이 되는지를 보여주는 작품이 선보인다. 작품의 촬영을 위한 필수요소 외에 공간의 구성,대상과의 거리감,편집, 심지어는 감각적인 부분에 있어서도 필연적으로 무엇을 선택하고 결정해야 하는 상황이 매 순간 발생하며 이 과정은 마치 회화의 완성을 위하여 다양한 조형기법을 선택하는 화가의 그것과 마찬가지라 할 수 있다.

“독창적인 사진 자체는 없지만 독자적인 시선과 관점은 여전히 유효하며, 해석하는 방식에 따라 완전히 같은 사진일 수도,전혀 다른 사진이 될 수도 있다.이것이 타 장르 와는 다른 사진만의 본질이라 할 수 있다.” – 김 태 동 -

Kim’s work sheds light on the meaning behind peopleand spaces of contemporary era while also pursuing a sense of perfectionthrough qualities of documentary photography which records reality, and theaesthetic standards of straight photography such as light, illumination, timeand frame.

While straight photograph of the past merelycaptured the subject relying on the technicality of the camera, Kim works with asemi-constructive attitude which stages a portion of reality in order tocapture the artistic intention of the artist, thereby demonstrating theaesthetic nature specific to camera and photography.

In this exhibition, Kim presents works whichimplicatively illustrate the many decisions at various levels which must betaken for one photograph, and how a new photograph is formed through suchprocess of decisions. There are many elements which must be decided besides thefundamental selective elements necessary for shooting a photograph, such ascomposition of space, distance from the subject, editing and even aspects ofthe individual style. Such process of deciding and making choices iscomparative to formative techniques in painting.

Kim illustrates the essence ofphotography that’s different from other genres, by demonstrating that whilethere may not be an original photograph, there is always an independent andunique perspective and point of view, and that a photograph can changecompletely depending on the perspective of interpretation.
